FRANK DINE FDR-10

INTRODUCTION:

FRANK DINE FDR -10 is the chemical specially recommended to remove rust and scale from steel components by IMMERSION –WIPE-OFF process.

ADVANTAGES:

FRANK DINE FDR 10 is easily applied; require no skilled labour and chemical knowledge.
FRANK DINE FDR 10 removes rust and scale from ferrous components efficiently without giving off obnoxious fumes.
Any FRANK DINE FDR 10 remaining on the ferrous components after derusting is in the form of inert ferric phosphate which does not corrode the metal.
They promote good paint adhesion; chemically clean, lightly etched surface is an excellent substrate for paint to adhere to.

OPERATIONAL DATA:

APPLICATION : By immersion – Wipe –Off
BATH STRENGTH : 1:1 to 1:2 depending on the nature of the rust.
TEMPERATURE : Room temperature.
TREATMENT TIME : This depends on the nature /amount of rust present.
POINTAGE : 12-20

PROCESS:

Fill up the bath at its operating level with FRANK DINE FDR -10 and water in the ratio of 1:1 to 1:2 .The correct amount of dilution depends upon on the nature of contaminations. Remove oil and grease using FRANK SOL .Treatment with FRANK SOL reduces the treatment time in FRANK DINE FDR -10 will remove them effectively. Remove any loose and heavy rust from iron and steel surfaces by wire brushing prior to the treatment in FDR -10 as they underline life of the bath.

TREATMENT:

Maintain the bath at its operating level by FRANK DINE FDR -10 and water to give a solution of required concentration. The relative amounts required can be judged from the speed of the derusting action of the bath.

Immerse the components fully and the treatment time depends upon the following factors:

The concentration of the bath The nature and amount of rust and oil present. Geometry of the specimen. 4. Finish desired 5. Agitation provided.

After the derustingis completed the components should be immediately dried by wiping with a clean cotton cloth .However, the recommended practice is by blowing moisture free compressed air as any loose piece of cotton sticking on the surface will affect the subsequent painting.

MAINTENANCE:

As the bath is used up, ferrous iron accumulates in the solution and this gradually slows down the derusting action .Consequently, as the bath ages a progressively more concentrated FRANK DINE FDR-10 solution must be used to maintain the speed of derusting.

When the addition of concentrated FRANK DINE FDR -10 speeds up the derusting for relatively short time only a white powdery deposit is formed on the work, the bath is spent and should be discarded.

FRANK DINE CONCENTRATION:

1. Pipette out 10 ml of the bath solution into a measuring flask and dilute to 100 ml with distilled water .Mix thoroughly.
2. Pipette out 10 ml of the diluted solution into a conical flask and add about 100 ml of distilled water and about 1 to 2 drops of bromocresol green indicator.
3. Titrate with 0.1 N Sodium hydroxide until the colour changes from yellow through green to a definite blue.
4. The bath is obtained from :
% of FRANK DINE V/V =Titration in ml ×3.15

IRON CONTENT :

1. Pipette out 10 ml of the bath solution into a flask and add 10 ml of 50 % Sulphuric Acid.Mix well.
2. Titrate with 0.1 N potassium permanganate solution till a light pink colour stable for atleast 15 seconds is obtained.
3. The percentage of ferrous iron in the bath is calculated from :
% Fe W/V =Titration in ml × 0.56

When the percentage of the ferrous iron in FRANK DINE FDR-10 touches 7 % the bath should be discarded and a fresh bath made.

OPERATIONAL NOTES:

1. The components should be NEVER BE WASHED OR RINSED WITH WATER.
2. The components should be fully immersed otherwise due to splashing white streaks shall form on the surfaces after the treatment should be immediately drained off. Usage of compressed air lowers will be of definite advantage.
3. The components should be immediately dried either by wipe –off or by air blowing.
4. The surface will attain attractive grey colour and the colour depends on the type of the material .If the white powdery coatings is observed at Isolated spots ,this can be removed by brushing with fresh 25% FRANK DINE FDR-10 solution and wiped.
5. The surface should be clean & dry .If the surface after wipe –off becomes sticky in nature, this indicates the bath is slightly concentrated and can be corrected by diluting in stages .Checking the pointage at this stage shall be of immense value.
6. Loading & Spacing is also important and care should be taken to avoid air locks at corners.

TREATMENT WITH AGITATION:

While treating hollow surfaces like tubes and pipes, the movement of bath solution becomes restricted, And also locked air bubbles get entrapped. This results in preferential wetting and hence preferential derusting .This increases the treatment time considerably.Therfore to quicken the process the bath should be agitated either by circulating pumps or by compressed air agitation.

EQUIPMENT:

TANK

This can be of either stainless steel or of mild steel with FRP/Rubber lined.

AGITATION EQUIPMENTS:

They shall be made of acid resistant materials and piping that goes inside the bath shall be of stainless steel, miled steel (lead lined) or PVC

HANDLING PRECAUTIONS:

FRANK DINE FDR -10 contain acid has a drying action on the skin, which although comparatively harmless, may cause chapping and make the skin receptive to irritants. To prevent damage to the operator’s clothing, rubber or pvc boots and aprons are recommended.

If FRANK DINE FDR -10 gets on the skin, wash it off immediately with cold water. As a regular precaution operators should rub a protective cream into the hands before starting the work. If FRANK DINE FDR -10 is splashed into the eyes, wash it away with liberal quantities of clean water and obtain immediate medical attention.
