FRANK DINE FDR-5

INTRODUCTION

FRANK DINE FDR-5 is a Chemical intended for removing rust and scale from steel surfaces when dipped and also for providing a thin layer or Iron phosphate coating when dried.

ADVANTAGES

FRANK DINE FDR-5 will remove rust and scale from ferrous components efficiently without giving any obnoxious fumes.

Any derusting remaining on the ferrous surface after derusting is in the form of inert ferric phosphate which does not corrode the metal.

OPERATIONAL DATA

Application : By Immersion
Bath Strength (v/v) :1:2 to 1:3 depending upon the nature of rust.
Temperature :Ambient Temperature
Temperature Time : Depends on the nature and the amount of rust.
Pointage : 20 – 30
Tank Material : M.S.with FRP ( 4mm Thk Isopthaleic) Lined

PROCESS

PREPARATION OF THE SURFACE :

Remove oil and Grease by either FRANKSOLS, degreasing or by FRANK MOVE FG-3.. Remove any loose heavy rust from Iron and steel surfaces by wire brushing. Immerse the components in FRANK FINE FDR-5 until clean. The time depends on the amount of contamination on the metal and the concentration and the iron content of the bath. Light to medium rust will be removed in few minutes.

RINSING ( Required only when subsequent Zinc Phosphating to be done)

Before Phosphating rinse in clean running water. Before painting rinse in clean running water and hen in hot water (80°C) containing up to 50 ml. of FRANK BOND per 100 litrs of water. FRANK BOND in this rinse minimizes staining during drying, counteracts the effects of any hardness in the rinse water and slightly improves corrosion resistance. It also acidifies the surface slightly before drying and thereby improves adhesion under humid conditions.

FINISHING

Phosphate or, if no further pre treatment is required, dry and paint as soon as possible. Heavy gauge parts may Contain sufficient latent heat to dry the surface and no extra heat is required, sheet metal parts should be dried in an oven or blown with compressed air.

Apply FRANK SEAL PHOS or paint as soon as possible after drying. Any delay may cause the surface to become contaminated again, thus nullifying the treatment. Ideally, the FRANK DINE cleaning should take place immediately before FRANK SEAL PHOS treatment or painting and in any case the work should not be left overnight before finishing.

BATH OPERATION:

CHEMICAL REQUIRED

The process uses FRANK DINE FDR-5 which is added to water to give a solution of the required concentration. This may vary from 25% - 35 %volume by volume depending upon the nature and severity of rust on the company.

MAINTENANCE

Keep the bath at its operating level by FRANKDINE FDR-5 and water. The relative amounts required can be judged from the speed of the derusting action of the bath.

As the bath is used ferrous Iron accumulates in the solution and this gradually slows down the derusting action. Consequently, as the bath ages progressively more concentrated FRANK DINE FDR-5 bath will quicken the derusting, but not exceed the maximum concentration of one part of FRANK DINE FDR-5 in three parts of water at the maximum operating temperature of 70° C. When the addition of concentrated FRANK DINE FDR-5 speeds up the derusting for a relatively short time only and a white powder deposit is formed on the work, the bath spent should be discarded.

The FRANK DINE FDR-5 concentration and iron content are measured as follows:

FRANK DINE CONCENTRATION

1.Pipette 10 ml of the bath solution into a measuring cylinder and dilute 100 ml with distilled water. Mix thoroughly.
2.Pipette 10 ml of the distilled solution into a flask and add about 100 ml of distilled water and about 12 drops of Bromocresol green indicator.
3.Titrate with 0.1N sodium hydroxide until the colour changes from yellow through green to a definite blue.

The number of ml of sodium hydroxide used is the Pointage of the bath.

Please note that the bath containing 25% v/v of FRANK DINE FDR-5 will give a strength of 20.0 points when tested as above To raise one point add 1.3 Litres of FRANK DINE FDR-5 for every 100 Ltrs, of bath which operates at 20.00 points strength.

IRON CONTENT

1.Pipette 10 ml of the diluted bath solution into a flask and add 10 ml of 50% Sulphuric acid .Mix well.
2.Titrate with 0.1N Potassium Permanganate Solution until a light pink colour stable for at least 15 seconds is obtained.
3.The percentage of the ferrous iron in the bath is obtained from: % Fe W/v = Titration in ml x 0.56.

When the percentage of the ferrous iron in a FRANK DINE bath touches 7% the bath should be discarded and a fresh one made.

HANDLING PRECAUTIONS :

FRANK DINE FDR- 5 contains acid and has a drying action on the skin, which may cause chapping and make the skin receptive to irritants. To prevent damage to the operators rubber or PVC boots and aprons are recommended.

If FRANK DINE FDR-5 gets on the skin, wash it off immediately with cold water. As a regular precaution operators should rub a protective cream into the hand before starting work. If FRANK DINE FDR-5 is splashed into the eyes, wash it away with liberal quantities of clean water and obtain immediate medical attention.
