For every 1000 litres add the following to the water in sequence with stirring.

FRANK PHOS FZ-6 : 50 Litres.
Frank Tone ( 25% w/v solution) : 1 Litre.

CONTROL POINTS ( GUIDANCE ONLY)

POINTAGE - 25 – 35
Frank Tone Titration - 0.5 – 1.5 ml
Temperature - 65 – 70 °C
Immersion Time - 5 – 10 minutes.

PROCESS

SURFACE PREPARATION :
1. Remove all grease by FRANK SOL / FRANK MOVE FG-3 followed by rinsing.
2. Remove any rust and scale present by immersing in FRANK DINE FDR-4 followed by thorough rinsing.

PHOSPHATE COATING
Immerse in the FRANK PHOS FZ-6 bath for 5-10 minutes at 65-70°C

RINSING :
Rinse in clean running water followed by a hot water rinse containing a trace of FRANK BOND. FRANK BOND in the final rinse counteracts the effects of any hardness in the rinse water and improves the corrosion resistance . It also acidifies the surface slightly before drying and thereby ensures good paint adhesion under prolonged humid conditions.

DRYING :
Dry using a oven or compressed air if necessary. Heavy range steel parts often contain sufficient heat to dry the surface and no extra heat is needed. Small parts can be dried on a hot plate or in a hated centrifuge.

SEALING :
Phosphate coating are not in themselves Rust Proof and must be sealed with plant, stain or oils as soon as possible to provide permanent protection. Details of Frank range of speciality rust preventives will be made available on request.

BATH CONTROL
Restore the working level of the bath regularly, with tap water to make good evaporation and drag out losses. Check the FRANK PHOS FZ-6 and FRANK TONE concentration using the tests described below. Before testing adjust the FRANK PHOS FZ-6 bath to its normal working level with tap water, stir and check that the bath is at its working temperature.

FRANK PHOS FZ-6 concentration – Pointage Titration.
1. Pipette 10 ml of the bath solution into a conical flask.
2. Add a few drops of Phenolphthalein indicator solution and mix by shaking.
3.Titrate with 0.1 N Sodium Hydroxide until a permanent pink colour is obtained.
4.The number of ml of 0.1 N Sodium Hydroxide added is the points of the bath. Add 180
ml if FRANK PHOS FZ-6 per 100 litres of bath solution for each point below 25. ( for a 5.0% v/v solution).

II TITRATION METHOD
1.To 50 ml of the bath solution add about 10 ml of 50% sulphuric acid.
2.Titrate with0.1 N potassium permanganate until the pink colour persists for 15 seconds.
3.The number of ml of potassium permanganate added is the FRANK TONE titre value and this should be 0.5 – 1.5 ml. If necessary add more FRANK TONE . Approximately 30 ml of FRANK TONE solution will raise the Litre by 1 ml in a 100 litre bath.

Phosphate coatings are not in themselves rust – proof and must be sealed with paint or oils as soon as possible to provide permanent protection.

BATH MAKE UP AND OPERATION FOR ZINC PHOSPHATING WITH FRANK PHOS FZ6 AND IRON BUILD – UP

Chemicals required
The process requires FRANK PHOS FZ-6 STEEL WOOL and FRANK BOND for use in the final rinse.

MAKE-UP

1. Partially fill the tank with water and add 5.0 litres of FRANK PHOS FZ-6 for every 100 litres of bath.
2. Fill in the bath to its operating level with water and stir the solution thoroughly.
3. Heat the bath to the temperature of 75-80° C and add 25-50 gms of degreased steel wool per 100 litres of solution.
4.After about 10 mts when the gassing has ceased, remove the wool, heat the bath to its operating and bring into use.

NOTE
The FRANK PHOS FZ-6 bath is controlled by determining its strength and iron concentration as follows:

DETERMINATION OF STRENGTH

FRANK PHOS FZ-6 STRENGTH BY TITRATION METHOD

1. Pipette 10 ml of the bath solution into a beaker.
2. Add a few drops of Phenolphthalein indicator and mix by shaking.
3. Titrate with 0.1 N Sodium Hydroxide until a permanent pink colour is obtained.
4. The number of ml of 0.1N Sodium Hydroxide added is the “Point” of the bath .Add 170 ml of FRANK PHOS FZ- 6 per 100 litres of bath for each point below 20

DETERMINATION OF IRON CONCENTRATION
Pipette 10 ml sample of bath solution into a conical flask. Add 5 ml of 50% Sulphuric acid solution. Titrate with N/10 potassium permanganate solution at a pink colour that persists for at least 15 seconds. Ferrous Iron = No.of mls of N/10 potassium permanganate required X 0.056 when the ferrous iron concentration reached 0.4% or more discard all or part of the bath.

MAINTENANCE
During processing, sludge is formed as a natural by product of the coating reaction. This accumulates at the bottom of the tank. Being inert, the sludge will not affect the chemical balance of the FRANK PHOS FZ-6 bath but with excessive accumulation it may touch the work causing improper coating. It is therefore, necessary to desludge the FRANK PHOS FZ-6 bath at regular intervals. To do this allow the sludge to settle overnight and pump the top clear liquid into the emptied rinse tank and discard the sludge. Wash out the FRANK PHOS FZ-6 tank and return the solution . Restore the bath to its operating level by adding tap water and FRANK PHOS FZ-6 in the same proportions as the original bath.
